The Atomic Aquatics SplitFin®

A radical new approach to diver propulsion. With the slightest kick, the split blade deflects to form a pair of wings that slice through the water with reduced drag, creating lift in the forward direction to propel you ahead. Compared to conventional fins, the SplitFin® swims with less effort, stress and strain resulting in greater sustained speed, power and comfort. Independent testing has shown that this design can significantly reduce air consumption!

The Atomic Aquatics Full-Foot SplitFin®

The Atomic Aquatics SplitFin® is now available in a full-foot model. The Full-Foot SplitFin® is lightweight — lighter than other full-foot split fin designs — yet delivers results comparable to the larger open heel fin. Designed to deliver the highest performance ever achieved by a full-foot fin, the Atomic Aquatics Full-Foot SplitFin® meets and exceeds user expectations whether being used for snorkeling or scuba diving, and has proven to be the highest performing full-foot fin in the world. Using the patented Nature’s Wing design Atomic Aquatics has added a unique light-weight batten and blade design that delivers incredible performance and more power.

Scuba divers traveling to remote warm water destinations choose our full-foot model because it's extremely lightweight, more comfortable, very attractive and simpler to transport. The fins are easy to pack and don’t take up as much space as traditional, heavier open heel fins. The performance it delivers is simply amazing making this model a favorite among divemasters and instructors in resort areas around the world. Even divers in cold water areas choose the Full-Foot SplitFin
® as the perfect compliment for their gear bag. Now there’s no reason to carry heavy open heel fins when traveling to warm water destinations. The Atomic Aquatics Full-Foots don’t have cumbersome buckles, are less bulky and even double as snorkeling fins when desired.

Why SplitFins® are better than regular fins

Because you can swim faster and further with less effort, stress and strain! Compared to the conventional style fins that you probably own, the SplitFin® operates more efficiently that the "paddle" type fins that you're used to. They deliver more propulsion with less drag and kick with less effort. Using hard kicking paddle fins can result in leg strain, fatigue and cramping. This reduces your ability to sustain high speeds for long periods of time. A fin that is hard to kick is often falsely perceived by divers to be an indication of power. However, tests with underwater speedometers show that these divers are often actually moving relatively slowly, even though they "feel" like they are moving fast. Kicking effort has no direct relationship to speed or power.

How SplitFins® work

Your conventional paddle fins are just that. They work by pushing some of the water rearward like an old paddlewheel steamship. As a paddle fin is pushed through the water, much of the water spills over the top surface of the blade and sticks to it, creating drag. Extra kicking effort is needed to overcome that drag. In contrast, the SplitFin® slices though the water with two wing shaped surfaces, creating lift and forward propulsion more like a propeller. Any water traveling over the top of the blade is funneled into and out of the opening (split) between the blades. Drag is reduced, effort is reduced and efficiency is increased. The Atomic Aquatics SplitFins® use Propeller-FinTM Technology, which delivers ultra-high speeds with a small-range rapid flutter kick in the same manner that increasing the RPM on a boat's propeller accelerates a boat to high speeds.

1 Power Rails - The backbone of the SplitFin®, the highly resilient power rails, store and release energy with every kick. Propietary and exclusive to Atomic Aquatics, this material will not deteriorate or lose its resiliency.

2 Flex Battens - Semi-rigid battens set in the soft elastomeric blade controls the precise wing shape to optimize thrust and reduce drag.

3 Split Blade - The split blade deflects with the slightest kick to form a pair of wings that slice through the water with reduced drag, propelling you forward.

4 High Surface Ratio Blade - Large surface area blade improves pivoting, turning and alternate kicking styles.

5 Hinge Points - Thin, yet strong and highly flexible hinges points between the semi-rigid battens cause the blade to react quickly and efficiently to the slightest kick.

6 Anatomically Correct Foot Pocket - Contoured to fit your foot without stress points, with semi-open toe for added comfort.

7 Power Plate - Internal sole plate creates rigid platform beneath the foot for greater power transfer to the blade yet allows soft, comfortable foot pocket.

8 EZ-LOK Buckle System - Totally new, patented buckle system design features easy, one-handed quick release of the buckle from the fin. Re-attachment is simple and secure. U.S. Patent #6,463,640.

How to use the SplitFins
®

SplitFin in yellow.Don't worry about how easy the SplitFins® are to kick. There is nothing wrong; you're probably already going just as fast as you did with your old fins. Although they work with a variety of kicking styles, you should adapt to a smaller range, more frequent flutter kick for maximum performance. The smaller-range rapid flutter kick also keeps your legs within the slipstream of your body so that you punch a hole in the water that is only as big as your shoulders and your tank. Remember, less drag means more speed and less effort.

The SplitFins® are designed to produce maximum power with a smaller and more frequent flutter kick. Paddle fins are not. The smaller the range and the greater the frequency, the greater the power and speed.

How to swim against a current

The Atomic Aquatics SplitFins® virtually eliminate muscle strain, fatigue and cramping to enable you to swim longer distances against stronger currents. Divers have reported being able to make headway against currents they would not normally be able to overcome with paddle type fins.

Whatever the speed of the current is, you need to swim faster than the speed of the current to make headway. The true indication of power is actual speed. A small-range rapid flutter kick with the SplitFin® delivers the same or greater speeds than any paddle fin without the strain.

In order to reach and sustain high speeds, you need to be streamlined. The reduced kick size of the SplitFin® allows you to maintain constant speed, power and momentum throughout the kick cycle. In contrast, the wide kick used with paddle fins extends your legs above and below the slipstream of your body creating drag which slows you down just like swimming around with outstretched arms would. In a fast current, kicking any fin with wide exaggerated strokes could actually cause you to lose ground due to the increased drag created by your legs. Rather than experiencing the stop-and-go movement created by wide kicking strokes, a small-range rapid flutter kick with the SplitFin® will propel you effortlessly with the free feeling of constant speed and momentum

When you're swimming against a strong current, you're not making much headway and you often have to swim for a long periods of time to get anywhere. Unlike paddle fins, the small range rapid kick of the SplitFins® achieves high power and speed with almost no leg strain or resistance. This allows you to swim against currents for longer periods of time before tiring or succumbing to muscle strain and cramping. The SplitFins® can even reduce your air consumption by 20-40% as documented by independent tests.

New EZ-LOK buckle system (Patent Pending)

This totally new buckle system snaps on or off the fin with ease, yet the positive action will not release accidentally. The buckles will rotate 180 degrees and the straps adjust with a simple pull. The straps should be just snug with the foot placed fully into the foot pocket.

Adjusting the strap Reattaching the strap Reattaching the strap
To release the buckle from the fin, simply squeeze both tabs together and pull the buckle back to slide it off the mounting posts. To reattach, lineup the post with the opening in the front of the buckle and push it onto the post. To adjust the strap length, depress the center button and pull the heel of the strap to loosen, or pull the end of the strap to tighten.
